Tenth Anniversary Book

Dónal writes: After consultation to gauge interest from club members in the idea of marking QRC’s tenth anniversary with a book – not necessarily on the History of the Club but members’ reminiscences and stories that stand out for them – I am happy to say that we are good to go.

Queensferry Regatta 2019

If you would like to, get your thinking caps on and see what stands out for you as a memory of the Club along with any photos that you think might go well with it.

The club’s Flickr collection has a vast array of photos to choose from. Plenty of memorable moments to choose from!

Marching in March update

Beth (on behalf of the committe) writes: Just a quick note to keep you in the loop about our Club’s Virtual Adventures: Congratulations! We have now hit a total of 1,749.31 miles… awesome efforts by all!

We’ve also had 192 entries to date!

We have also received some great ideas for our next virtual location – to name but a few: Venice, Lake Geneva, a Viking Tour of Scandinavia and Canada (an outlier but piqued our interest nonetheless!).

So it is 1,221 miles from our beloved SQF to Kortegene. We decided it was only right to head on to Venice, for carb loading and yet more rowing. We had surplus miles so hopping across to Lake Garda for yet more Italian food, rowing and scenery was the only thing for it!

Rachel H was among several QRC members who took to the Venetian canals in 2017

Once we had our fill of Italian food, weather and rowing we dashed over to Lake Constance. Although a little early for the Moos Water Procession we created a floral decoration for the Lass and Maid and have now started on our way to Goitzsche – which is 1,923 miles from our Club. We haven’t quite made it to Goitzsche yet so please do continue to add those miles travelled to make sure we don’t end up stranded…

Look in the group emails for a link to the form you can use to input all those miles!

Just a little house keeping: please remember to just input any distance travelled in miles, without the units and without any other details, e.g. If I Fosbury Flopped 4.5 miles l I would only pop ‘4.5’ into the appropriate answer box… Possibly after I’d had the chance to tut at other inferior high jump techniques… If you want to make your own running total of miles and input this once a week, or even if you want to do a new entry for every mile you travel, you’re most welcome – whatever suits you best.

Thank you for all the community effort and fun we’ve had – it is already warming the cockles of our salty-sea-dog hearts! Happy RPM Classing, hopping, indoor rowing, spinning, kayaking, rock-climbing, skipping, walking, crawling, jumping, Ministry of Funny Walking, or simply dashing round the ‘big shop’ in March.

P.S. Please reply to bethchristie1@gmail.com with any quibbles, queries or quandaries. Or even if you just fancy a quick e-chat.

Save the date!

Marianne writes: Tony Bacon has very kindly agreed to run a  virtual club quiz over Zoom!   So get Friday 09 April in your diaries.

More details to follow, but teams should set up WhatsApp groups for conferring on answers. Team captain will be responsible for recording answers and self-marking.

Hope to see you there!

Marching in March Week 2

Just a quick update on our Club’s Virtual Adventures:

  • Congratulations, we have now hit a total of 614.56 miles… awesome efforts by all!
  • We’ve also had nearly 80 entries to date!

Any eagle-eyed among us may have spied that we have now reached Kortgene in only one week of this challenge. Therefore, the form will look a little different from now on. We’re now taking recommendations for our next destination and can’t wait to see what you think…

Click here to find the shinier, edited, form (the exact same link as last time)!
Just a little house keeping: please remember to just input any distance travelled in miles, without the units and without any other details, e.g. If I rolled 2 miles down the nearest hill I would only pop ‘2’ into the appropriate answer box… Possibly after I’d made my way dizzily home… If you want to make your own running total of miles and input this once a week, or even if you want to do a new entry for every mile you travel, you’re most welcome – whatever suits you best.

Thank you for all the community effort and fun we’ve had – it is already warming the cockles of our salty-sea-dog hearts! Happy cycling, hopping, indoor rowing, kayaking, rock-climbing, skipping, walking, crawling, jumping, sauntering, galloping, or simply dashing round the ‘big shop’ in the second week of March.

Update on Club Activities

Marianne and Dónal write: Following the latest announcement from the Scottish Government, it’s expected that we will shortly return to a Levels system.

The City of Edinburgh is likely to move to Level 3.  Under the current rules, because rowing is classed as an outdoor contact sport, for rowing for those ages 18+ to take place, the City of Edinburgh needs to be in Level 2.  It may be that the details of what is allowed under each level will change, but at this time it’s hard to see general rowing taking place before the end of April.

As ever, the Covid group will keep an eye on things and take advice from the SCRA with a view to getting back on the water at the earliest safe opportunity.
Your Committee are being as positive as possible.  We’ve been looking at the 2021 regatta and event programme in the hope that we might be able to resume that fun aspect of our sport.  Time will tell.  The priority, as it is for all clubs, will be to get members back on our home waters.

Social rowing in February 2020

Meanwhile, the Saturday morning Virtual Shed continues, and I know some of us have enjoyed the series of virtual seamanship talks and lectures run by Elie and Earlsferry, and one on the Isle of May through the Seabird Centre.  Some of us have taken on British Rowing’s ROW31 programme and had so much fun (anyone for more side planks?😩), we’re doing it all again!

Of course, there’s been the wonderful sea shanty collaboration, the club WhatsApp group, and many of you will be keeping in touch with each other in your own ways. Beth’s Marching in March challenge has got off to a cracking start with well over 200 miles being recorded already, so let’s see how far we can go with that!   We have another fun virtual event coming up, but more on that later… It’s a lovely day, so get out there, do some miles for Beth and enjoy the first signs of Spring!  Stay safe.
